University of Virginia - There are a group of scientists that investigate unusual experiences called 'The Division of Perceptual Studies'. A scientist called Dr Ian Stevenson set up the group in 1967. He was really interested in children who reported having memories of lives they had lived before they were born. This is called 'reincarnation'. They do other interesting research too. They also research out of body experiences. Our research shows that lots of children have these types of experiences. This is when we have an experience of being located in space, somewhere outside our body. Sometimes, when someone has an out of body experience, they meet other people. In some cases, other people (who are not out their body) can see them. Cool!
Sir Roger Penrose and Blackholes - An important scientist called Roger Penrose has made some exciting discoveries about black holes and the universe. Sir Penrose, using clever mathematics and physics, says that the 'Big Bang' was not the beginning of the universe. In fact, the universe keeps dying and being reborn. That sounds like the stories about reincarnation told by children in Dr Ian Stevenson's research! Perhaps we are just like the Universe?
The Universe as a Hologram? – In our research, some children and young people suggested that we might be living in a hologram. A bit like computer games. Some scientists also believe that we are living in a giant hologram'. The scientists don't mean that the universe is fake. Instead they are making suggestions that a distant two-dimensional (flat) surface contains lots of data (information). Like a hologram, this information is projected to appear as 3D (solid). This is a bit like us being characters on a TV screen!
Quantum Weirdness – Quantum physics investigates very very small things, the bits of our universe that we cant see like atoms and particles. At this level, things can get really weird! Objects like particles can be tangled up when they are at long distances from each other. They effect each other! This makes no sense, even to very clever scientists. Things that can happen at this level have been compared to science fiction. Some scientists have suggested a 'many worlds theory'. Meaning that there are parallel universes that we might all be part of!
